Sewing group

The first Saturday of the month is my sewing day. I’m part of a pretty fantastic group of sewers which began in August last year. The first day was the day of Chris’s life saving surgery. So instead of sewing I called in to tell them what had happened and drop off a stash of material. It wasn’t until January this year that I could actively be involved.

We sew for a charity organisation called Days for Girls Australia which is part of a global/international concern originating in America. They do wonderful work providing 3rd world/ underprivileged countries with personal hygiene kits for girls and women who have nothing. In some cultures the girls are forced to miss school for several days each month which disadvantages their chances of a good education.

Last friday we addressed some quality control issues to get some uniformity and clarity on what was expected in a finished kit. It appears that measurements and accuracy need to be checked and double checked. So with that in mind and everyone now on the same page we steamed ahead and were very productive.

Fund raising is always necessary. Although we get donations we need things like hotel soaps, washers, strong zip lock bags, underpants in multi sizes, ribbon for bags, cotton for straight sewers and overlockers, PUL fabric ……….

One of our ladies with a background in catering, came up with the suggestion of making soup to buy instead of taking our own lunch. Today was the second time and we had a choice of 2 different soups. $60 in profit. This idea is proving popular.

Next month another member who has a cleaning product business is giving a demonstration with all the procedes going to DfGs.

I’ve brought home approx 100 liners to overlock before next month,. Not sure how far I’ll get, no pressure!
